Because an Apple a Day… (Part I)
To all you racers and car owners out there, listen up. You better learn to car for your ride before it starts malfunctioning and strands your ass on the middle of the freeway. I’m about to give you some tips on car care. This is special since it caters to racers in particular, so you better listen up and pay good attention or it’s your ass…
THE BASICS
These apply to all cars, not just those primarily used for racing.
1. Keep you car clean. It is said that “cleanliness is next to godliness” or something like that. A clean car means it’s free from foreign substances that may cause some components to rust, fade, clog, etc. Always wash and wax your car to keep it looking pristine while protecting it at the same time. You’ll find as your car age that it looks and functions way better than others.
2. The Differentials. Always keep these well-lubricated so your car stays on the proper path when turning. After 20 or 25 runs, there may be leaks present, and when that happens you need to take the differential apart and put some more grease. It’s all about the grease baby, yeah.
3. Shocks. Okay, I know you know what these do. Shocks or Shock absorbers help stabilize your car when you hit bumps or bodies on the road. These ensure that no matter what happens your tires are still in contact with the road. Check its O-rings from time to time as they may need rebuilding.
4. Drive pulleys. These things turn the gear shaft belts. Always make sure the teeth of the pulley are free from any foreign material as these could wear it down.
5. Drive Belts. These require changing regularly as it is considered a disposable part. The drive belts provide the proper medium for power to be transferred from the gear shafts to the differential pulleys. They can be tensioned when called for, but if you find that it doesn’t help anymore, then you need to replace it with a new one.
6. Ball Bearing. Useful for any rotating parts in the car, the ball bearing need only a quick brush from time to time. If you could get rubber-sealed bearings for your car, even better.
7. Gear Mesh. The relationship between the primary drive gear and the secondary drive gear .A tight gear mesh has too much friction and will cause the motor or engine to work too hard and could melt the spur gear from the friction. A loose gear mesh will probably cause the pinion gear to strip the spur gear, ruining the spur gear. It’s your task to create the perfect balance so everything works smoothly and problem-free.
